‘Fragile. Heavy. Handle with care’ performance

I was walking around while wearing an eye mask. I was wearing a sign that said ‘FRAGILE. HANDLE WITH CARE. HEAVY.’ on one side and ‘take my hand and lead me anywhere. I trust you’ on the other side. I couldn’t see anything and had my hands extended, inviting audience for participation.

Anyone could grab my hand and lead me wherever they wanted. During the performance, I was sometimes led by somebody and sometimes wandered by myself. I didn’t have a specific destination.

The ‘FRAGILE. HANDLE WITH CARE. HEAVY.’ sign is a cardboard fragment of a big box.

Here are the basic rules of the ‘Fragile. Handle with care. Heavy’ performance:

  • the performer needed to not see anything for the entire duration of the performance, therefore, they could not remove the eye mask anytime;

  • if the artist was left alone without a guiding human, the artist could wander without guidance with their hands extended to monitor the surrounding space and to invite guidance;

  • the artist was not allowed to talk to the audience but could interact non-verbally;

  • the performance ended with a phone alarm set for 40 minutes after the beginning of the performance.
